Lars Krahl - IT specialist

My name is Lars Krahl and I am from Dresden.

Since my very first Commodore 64 I am interested in everything operated by Bits and Bytes. After accomplishing my A-Levels and serving my basic military duty, I completed an apprenticeship as IT specialist, successfully making my hobby my job.

I am known as a mostly joyful person who likes sarcasm and offers precise and honest criticism, if asked for. Eager for knowledge and web-affiliated I am always searching for new, interesting techniques and computer-related topics. Therefore my interests range from programming, networking and web design/-development to graphics design and video and audio editing.

Also, I do know where my towel is.

Career:

• 1991 - 1995: primary school (135. Grundschule Dresden)
• 1995 - 2003: high school (Johann-Andreas Schubert-Gymnasium Dresden)
• 2003 - 2004: military service
• 2004 - 2007: apprenticeship as IT specialist
• since 2007: studies of computer science at the TU Dresden

In the area of server administration, I have gained a wide experience with all current server- and client-operating systems from Microsoft Windows, as with several Linux-distributions like Debian, openSuSE and Ubuntu. Going into detail, I have dealt with clustered (highly available) services, virtual environments, terminal server-solutions, storage areas, etc. (Project: high-availability Linux terminal server with LTSP (German) - PDF, 428K)

Amongst the usual services like file-, web-, SQL- and DNS-servers I have worked with different directory services like ADS, NDS and LDAP. That is why administering heterogeneous networks with Windows-, Linux- and Mac-clients is nothing new to me. (school project: Windows-cluster with iSCSI-NAS (German))

In the area of web-development, I know how to work with PHP4/5 in connection with MySQL/MSSQL. I am also very experienced with (X)HTML, CSS and AJAX/JavaScript, using these techniques often and successful. (module for a community site)

Additionally, I am familiar with Ciscos IOS and the PIX-Firewall. (tutorial: basics of the PIX-Firewall (German) - PDF, 24K)

Working autonomously or in a team is evenly enjoyable for me. Through eagerness for knowledge and open-mindedness, I regularly acquire new skills. Next to basic knowledge of the Russian and French language, I am very good at writing and speaking English. Through my hobbies, I am also experienced with several 2D/3D-image-, audio- and video editing software.
